Protection & Treatment
for Gum Disease
A lack of brushing and flossing can lead to cavities for your teeth, but do you know what happens to your gums? They can develop a bacterial infection called gum disease, which literally breaks down the structures that support the teeth. That’s why it’s the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the US! Fortunately, our team is able to catch and treat gum disease early to ensure your smile stays happy, healthy, and always has a strong foundation.

Scaling & Root Planing
Gum disease is usually caused by deposits of tartar that have accumulated on the roots of the teeth below the gum line, which expose the nearby tissues to harmful bacteria. Scaling & root planing is specifically designed to remove them, and once the roots of the teeth have been cleaned (scaling), they are slightly reshaped to make them smoother (root planing). This makes it harder for tartar to gather near the gums in the future, protecting a patient from reinfection.
Antibiotic Therapy
In addition to a scaling & root planing treatment, our team can apply a topical antibiotic to the gums that quickly dries and then slowly dissolves over the next few days. This exposes the gums to a powerful medicine for 24 hours a day, enabling us to eliminate any bacteria left over after an initial cleaning. This can also reduce the size of periodontal pockets, which are small spaces found between the teeth and gums where gum disease bacteria primarily likes to settle and multiply.
